Congresswoman Tenney talks farming issues at roundtable

NORWICH – Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney hosted an agriculture roundtable at the Chenango County Historical Society on Friday, giving local farmers a platform to voice their concerns about government's role in the ag industry.

The roughly two-hour discussion focused heavily on federal issues that farmers say are hindering the ag industry, including environmental regulations, labor laws, dairy marketing, and the complicated federal milk pricing system.

The goal, according to Tenney’s office, was to address issues that farmers from across the 22nd District have been facing in recent years, and consider ways Congress can help.

“Your feedback is important,” Tenney said to a table of a dozen local farmers. “Your expertise is going to be vital because I want to be sure we don’t continue making the same mistakes we’re making right now. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to make some changes.”

Tenney has been an advocate of upstate agricultural, championing calls for reforms to the Margin Protection Program for Dairy in the 2018 Farm Bill and for legislators to enforce current dairy trade laws.

She says that ag reform and farm family assistance is among her top priorities in her plan to spur economic growth in upstate.

“When we look at what’s happening in the dairy industry, one of the things we need to make sure we’re doing is building more processing and manufacturing capacity within New York State,” said Sheila Marshman, an associate professor of ag business at Morrisville State College, and whose husband operates a dairy farm in Oxford. “In many many cases, that may be encouraging outside investment.”

“We need to not only be cognizant of what’s happening on the farm, which is very important,” Marshman added, “but we also need to look at the entire food industry. We need to be able to keep manufacturers building and growing in New York in order to keep farms in business.”

After the discussion, Tenney visited the VanAlthuis Dairy Farm in Sherburne for an up-close look at the challenges of dairy farming.
