City Council proposes sign law helpful to businesses

NORWICH – The City of Norwich is considering changes to local zoning laws that will help business patrons answer the question: Who should I contact?


A proposal that would allow businesses to add contact information to their business signage was received without criticism by members of the Norwich Common Council earlier this month.


The proposal will allow business owners to add a phone number and/or an email address or website address with their name on a business sign.


It’s a simple change that city officials say could go a long way in promoting local commerce.

“There have been multiple requests by business owners who want a phone number on their signage, which at this time is not permitted,” said Codes Enforcement Officer Jason Lawrence, who presented the issue to the Norwich Joint Committee in August.
