Norwich City Court Judge Republican primary: Mike Genute

With local primary elections approaching, The Evening Sun met with both Republican candidates in the run for Norwich City Court Judge––an elected position held for the last 17 years by the Hon. James Downey, who is retiring at the end of this year. The 10-year term pays a salary of $108,800. What follows are the two candidates' stories, and why they see themselves as fit to sit as the next city court judge. Primary elections are slated for next Tuesday, September 12.

Mike Genute is an Assistant District Attorney running for Norwich City Court Judge.

“I can confidently say that I regularly handle more criminal matters in one month than either of my opponents have in the last 10 years––and that is not even referencing vehicle and traffic and minor criminal violations,” said Genute.

A native of northern New Jersey, Genute earned his degree in law at Quinnipiac University in 1996.

He worked as a county superior judge's law clerk before moving to Norwich in 2001 with his wife, Elaine.

“We saw an opportunity to move to a more rural area where we could start a family,” said Genute. “Norwich seemed like a pretty wholesome place to live and everyone was very friendly.”

Genute immediately became involved in the community as a member at the Norwich Family YMCA where he would begin coaching AAU basketball that year.

Since then, Genute has continually taught New Vision Law and Government and was of counsel to the District Attorney until 2011.

In 2011, Genute became an Assistant District Attorney.

“I have experience in the technical issues and the knowledge of the everyday issues going on in the community: what our community needs, how a judge should handle a lot of different issues. I also have an understanding from an educational perspective.”

Asked how his campaign compares to that of his opponent's, Genute said, “I think Norwich not only needs but deserves a city court judge that has a strong criminal law background.”

“With my criminal law focus and diverse legal background – including my judicial experience, being a mediator, labor negotiator, educator, and coach of our community's youth – nobody has the same set of experiences and involvement in the community to serve as our next City Court Judge.”
