Greene plays out of league, lights up scoreboard in 5-0 win
GREENE – The lady Trojans of Greene’s varsity field hockey team have once again drawn their record to .500 with an out-of-league game on Wednesday, against Liverpool.
“This was the best game we have played the whole season, so far,” said Greene head coach Christine McCabe. “We played both halves, together, it was good. Everyone played well across the board, we were just out of our minds.”
At the half, Greene had marched their way to a nice 3-0 lead – a lead that would only grow beyond the halftime break.
Scoring for the lady Trojans first was McKenna Sergi – who took an unassisted goal in for the 1-0 lead. Madison Rice found the net next as she took an assist from Sergi for the 2-0 score. Finishing the first half off was Jessica Unkel who snagged a pass from Skylar Gilmore for the cap of the 3-0 halftime lead.
The lady Trojans found their groove, adding two additional strikes in the second half – coming from Hannah Hatfield with an assist from Claire Moxley, and the final goal coming from none other than Sergi.
“After the weekend we picked ourselves up, had a couple good days of practice, and really focused on minimizing our fouls. We worked a lot on one-on-one defense and also our spacing to help spread the field out a little bit, making it easier to pass,” said coach McCabe. “It seemed to work, our passing was really strong, and the girls just played great together. Off ball movement and just overall, you could see them, all the dots connecting while they were out there. Hopefully this will carry into the next game.”
Next up for Greene field hockey (2-2 overall), they will, play the Black Knights of Windsor at Windsor this coming Saturday, September 16, at 11 a.m.
“It’ll be a good game for us. It is at their school (Windsor) and it is on grass. Grass is usually, it’s just a different game. I think the girls played a really good game tonight (against Liverpool) and left with a really good feeling. Everyone touched the ball and everyone was contributing,” said coach McCabe.
