Oxford and Norwich last season victories lead to rematch

Four girls teams participate in Greene Soccer Tournament

GREENE – A year ago, Oxford and Norwich both won in the first round of the 2016 Greene Girls Soccer Tournament. This season, the same has happened setting up a repeat in the championship game for Saturday night.
Norwich and Edmeston opened up the first round of the girls soccer double-header Thursday, September 14.
The Lady Tornado jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Sydney Coggins found the back of the net on an assist from Taylor Hansen at the 9:21 mark.
Fast forwarding 10 minutes later, Coggins recorded her second goal of the evening as she received a ball on a corner kick from Hannah Klockowski. The two connected one more time, giving Coggins a hat trick and Norwich a third goal of the match at 24:55 in the first half.
Purple Tornado Emily Shattuck finished with her left foot to give Norwich a 4-0 lead.
“Delilah Gieslinger had a phenomenal game, working the sides with speed and accuracy,” said Norwich Head Coach Matt Wilson of the overall team effort throughout the game.
Edmeston used two keepers during the match. Miranda Porter was shot at 6 times in the first half and teammate Madison Reinart received four of Norwich's attempts. The two goalies would combine for a save percentage of 71.4 percent.
Oxford looks to get revenge for a 3-0 loss to the Tornado from last year's championship game, as they took down the host Trojans in penalty kicks, 3-2.
“It was a pretty evenly matched game with each team having their opportunities,” said Blackhawks Head Coach Kathleen Cragle.
It proved to be true as Oxford and Greene both took four corners. Oxford would have two more opportunities at goal than Greene's 11 attempts.
Greene keeper Katie Pratt saved one in the shoot-out to determine the winner. Her opponent at the other end was Oxford's Lexi Kohlhepp. Kohlhepp would save three in the penalty kick overtime.
Greene will face Edmeston in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 16. The championship game will follow at 7 p.m.
