Rabies detected throughout county; DOH releases tips to stay safe

CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Environmental Health Department has issued a release saying rabies has been identified in multiple species across Chenango County.
Any animal exhibiting abnormal behavior in close proximity to residential areas should be considered dangerous.
The Chenango County Environmental Health Department offers these tips to keep yourself, your family, and your pets safe from the rabies virus:
• Family pets such as cats and dogs should always be kept up to date on the rabies vaccination, and dogs should wear the current rabies tag on their collar.
• Pets should be kept on a leash when outside.
• Enjoy wildlife from a distance. Rabid animals may show no fear of people and may seem friendly, so do not attempt to feed, approach, or touch wild animals in any environment.
• Do not attempt to trap and relocate skunks, or any wildlife. Doing so may spread rabies to other areas.
• Should your pet have an interaction with any animal suspected of having rabies, DO NOT handle your pet. If you must attend to your pet, wear gloves, a long sleeved shirt, and proceed with extreme caution as you can be exposed to rabies from lingering saliva on a pet's fur. The pet should be isolated and the saliva should be allowed to dry as this will kill the virus.
If you or someone you know is bitten by an animal or exposed to the rabies virus, wild or domestic, wash the affected area immediately with soap and water, and seek medical care. Be sure to report the exposure to public health officials.
