Athlete of the Week; Ellie O'Neill, Norwich Purple Tornando Soccer
NORWICH – Ellie O’Neill is a strong defensive player for the Lady Purple Tornado Soccer team. Captain for her final year, Ellie caps her soccer career with her 11th season this year. She is the center of the backline for Norwich and has played both as a sweeper and stopper for the program.
“Ellie is one of the most reliable and responsible athletes we have,” said Norwich Head Coach Matt Wilson. “She supports her teammates both on and off the field. She regularly calls plays and covers for her defensive line.”
O’Neill averages over 20 stops of offensive plays per game. Her dedication to our team is admirable and she is a natural leader.
Ellie has dedication and work ethic in everything she does, including her school work. Those efforts have placed Ellie at the top of the 2017 graduating class.
“Ellie has a very bright future ahead of her,” said Joe Downey, Athletic Coordinator for Norwich. “Ellie is exemplary student-athlete.”
Out of soccer, O’Neill participates in student government and dance.
O’Neill is found in the studio room of Perkins School of the Arts after school and practice. It has been that way for her for many years as Ellie has participated in dance for 15 years. Recently, Ellie has become a member of Phoenix Project Dance, a local dance company that preforms many shows all over the northeast. In June, you can find her on stage for her final Perkins performance for their annual recital.
O’Neill is looked up to by much of the youth in Norwich for her soccer and dance abilities, serving as a great all-around role model in the community.
