Athlete of the Week; Wes Mills, Norwich Purple Tornando Football
NORWICH — After nine years off the football field, Wes Mills is giving it one more year – His senior year.
Mills has been a member of the varsity golf team for Norwich since middle school. Now, he plays alongside his brother Zach with his father on the sidelines coaching him as an outside linebacker for the Purple defense.
“This is Wes’s first year in the football program,” said Norwich Head Coach Mike Chrystie. “Wes has gotten better week in and week out. You can see his confidence pick up week to week. He has been a part of our defense that has played very well thus far this year.”
Wes Mills is a kid of character that is shown on and off the football field.
Since fall sports started, Mills can be found anywhere the Norwich football team is located. Before the season started, you’d find Wes working nights at Ninas. And over the summer, Wes could be seen at the golf course, playing around with his father and and two younger brothers.
Mills is a true student-athlete at Norwich High School. Mills is currently ranked second in his graduating class.
“Wes is a leader on the field and in the classroom,” said Norwich’s Athletic Director Joe Downey. “He serves as a role model for our younger athletes.”
Two of those younger athletes are his younger brothers, Zach and Griffin. They can be found playing together on Norwich’s defense on Friday nights. Youngest brother Griffin isn’t too far away since he is on the sidelines of almost every game.
When Griffin is playing in his junior varsity games on Saturday, Wes is there to be one of his biggest fans.
