OWEGO – At the always uphill and challenging Owego invitational, the parallels and transformations between two rival sports is always an incredible spectacle to watch.
With the meet held at the Pheasant Hill Golf Course, where golfers normally drive, chip, and putt their way to victory – the polar opposite was held this past Saturday, September 23, on a balmy early morning.
Out of the 20 complete teams competing at the meet, the Purple Tornado boys finished 17 with a score of 421. If not for the deciding factor from Tioga’s sixth runner who split the tie between the two teams, the NHS crew would’ve moved up into the 16 spot. Starting the scoring off for Norwich was O’rion Slater who placed 57, navigating the 5 kilometer course with a time of 19:23.9. Stanton Baker was the next to finish the race with a time of 20:30.2, proving good for an 84 place finish. Noah Bufalini and Zayn Harper had back-to-back finishes with Bufalini coming in at 98 with a time of 21:06, and Harper following in hot pursuit timing 21:10 for 99. John Matlack-Grey was the final Tornado trooper to cross the tape, braving the less than ideal racing conditions with a time of 21:53 for the 119 finish out of the 146 total competitors.
On the women’s side, two Chenango County teams brought athletes to the fray, but neither the Unadilla Valley Storm nor did the Norwich Purple Tornado provided complete teams for the scoring.
Instead, the individualistic-team sport that is cross-country took full display. The first Chenango County girl to finish the 5000m race was Norwich’s Nicole Jeffrey. Jeffrey placed 19 while timing 21:59.2, just breaking into the top 20 after outlasting Nichols’ Claire Foley by .9 seconds. The second and final Tornado female emerging from the pack was Adrienne Vedder who placed 96 among the 123 competitors in a time of 26:35.
For the Unadilla Valley Storm, Isabel Mendoza placed 88 with a time of 25:50.6, being the first UV athlete to cross the tape on the morning. Katelyn Dixson braved the harsh and humid temperatures, finishing the race among the mid-day heat with a time of 32:48.9 over the 3.2 mile course for a placement of 121.
The Norwich Purple Tornado and Unadilla Valley Storm are both back in action when they travel to Unatego High School to compete at the Midstate Athletic Conference duals on Tuesday, September 26. The first varsity race is set to begin at 4:15 p.m.
