Late game heroics from the lady Marauders help lift S-E to win over Herkimer
ONEONTA – Traveling to play on the turf of the State University of New York at Oneonta – Sherburne-Earlville’s field hockey team put together a solid game plan to take the 2-1 win.
S-E field hockey bested Herkimer on Saturday, September 23, with a complete team effort and two S-E athletes scoring.
Herkimer got the scoring started on the day – going up 1-0 – as Megan Massoro nailed the goal at 24:26, assisted by Herkimer’s Savannah Stalteri. The lady Marauders answered back for the 1-1 halftime tie, when Rebecca and Nicole Turner linked up for a strike at 18:00. It was Rebecca who earned the goal with the assist coming from Nicole.
The heroics didn’t stop there for the young but spunky S-E team – who showed a lot of fight in their latest win.
Sherburne’s Piper Page nailed the game-winning goal at 10:06 in the second half.
“(The) S-E Lady Marauders really stepped up the pace the second half to pull off the win,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Christina Layman.
In the win, S-E had six shots on goal, while Herkimer managed four. S-E was awarded eight penalty corners and Herkimer was awarded nine in their loss.
In goal for S-E was Jade Diamond, who had three saves – Herkimer’s goalie, Katelyn Golicki, had two saves.
Next up for Sherburne-Earlville field hockey (3-5 overall, 0-3 league), they will be on the road next for a league game against NY Mills on Monday, September 25, at 4:30 p.m.
