S-E boys soccer fends off Golden Knights for big home win
SHERBURNE – Homecoming for the Sherburne-Earlville boys soccer team, the Marauders squared up with the Golden Knights of Holland-Patent.
S-E’s Kyle Cole earned two strikes on the day to help lift his home squad to the 3-2 win on Friday, September 22.
“The Marauder offensive build up and patience was rewarded when Edward Geier's pass, inside the final six minutes of the game, found Kyle Cole across the 18-yard box slotting home the game winning shot,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Mike Rodriguez.
Cole’s strike in the final minutes moved the marker from a 2-2 tie to a solid 3-2 win. Remarkably, S-E had amassed a nice 2-0 lead in the first half – but a slip in their play midway allowed the game to fall to an even pace.
To open the game, the Marauders sent in Owen Rodriguez, who capitalized on a defensive mistake and scored in the two-minute mark of the game. Following Rodriguez’s goal, it was Cole who added to the lead – scoring his first of two – when he converted a direct kick from 20 yards out in the 10-minute mark of the first half.
“The Purple Knights responded quickly with a goal of their own as Joshua Core split the Marauder defense beating Conor Ryan with a far post shot in the 12-minute mark,” said coach Rodriguez.
The game remained in S-E’s favor at the half with the Marauders leading at 2-1.
Tying the contest up – and prior to Cole’s winning shot for S-E – it was the Golden Knights who enjoyed solid play from Travis Roller, who scored Holland-Patent's second goal on the day, taking a 35-yard shot as he found the back of the net due to a miscommunication with the Marauder defense.
Despite taking the home win, S-E would get out maneuvered in the statistics for the day. S-E saw seven shots on goal and six corners – while Holland-Patent had eight shots on goal and seven corners.
In goal for S-E and taking the win was Conor Ryan – five saves. Being credited with the loss was HP’s Tucker Garrett, who had four saves.
Next up for Sherburne-Earlville boys soccer, they will see action next when they host Canastota on Tuesday, September 26, at 4:30 p.m.
