Bainbridge-Guilford volleyball takes second at Johnson City tournament
JOHNSON CITY – A 20 team tournament held in Johnson City this past weekend, home of the Wildcats, featured four Chenango County volleyball squads – with the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats emerging as the most decorated.
The B-G Bobcats managed to fight their way to the finals of the gold bracket – top-bracket – for what was a showdown with the Union-Endicott Tigers.
U-E snagged the win in the gold bracket finals with a 25-17 win over B-G. Advancing to the gold bracket was no easy task for Bainbridge-Guilford. Although they marched to the tune of nine wins and just one loss – B-G’s most important loss came when it mattered most, in the finals.
In pool play, qualifying for the gold bracket B-G downed Vestal at 2-0 (25-16 and 25-17), Waverly at 2-0 (25-20 and 25-18), Unadilla Valley at 2-0 (25-13 and 25-18), and Elmira at 1-1 (25-19 and 23-25).
Fellow Chenango County squad, the Norwich Purple Tornado, fought a valiant fight, earning a place in the top gold bracket as well.
In their pool, Norwich defeated Harpursville-Afton at 2-0(25-8 and 25-12), Maine-Endwell at 2-0 (25-15 and 25-17), before falling to Johnson City 0-2 (20-25 and 13-25) – splitting with Chenango Valley at 1-1 (14-25 and 27-25).
“We were successful but then not successful. There were 20 teams in the tournament. So, we were successful in our placement but not successful in the outcome. Great opportunity to get some good play time with some great teams,” said Norwich head coach Shelly Alger.
In the gold bracket, Norwich was eliminated by eventual champion Union-Endicott in the very first round. The B-G Bobcats advanced to the second round after a 25-20 win over the JC Wildcats. Following a 25-12 crushing of the Black Knights of Windsor, B-G was set to take on the finals and the U-E Tigers.
As stated, B-G finished second after losing to the Tigers at 25-17.
In the bronze bracket, Unadilla Valley and Harpursville-Afton were placed against each other – with UV advancing to the consolation finals.
On the other side of the bronze bracket, Deposit-Hancock defeated Moravia – setting up a UV against Deposit-Hancock Bronze final – to which UV fell to D-H at 25-19, after being up 18-14 earlier in the set.
Notably, no Chenango County teams were placed into the silver bracket.
“We played a Lot of tough teams this weekend and went there for that reason. We went 0-8 in pool play, and lost in the finals of the bronze bracket to Deposit-Hancock,” said Unadilla Valley head coach Bridget McHugh. “We went there to play against bigger schools so my girls can see what a big difference playing volleyball year-round makes and have them see where the UV coaching staff is working towards getting our program.”
Standings of each bracket:
• Gold: Union-Endicott, Bainbridge-Guilford, Windsor, Ithaca, Johnson City, Binghamton, Norwich, Vestal.
• Silver: Unknown results. Teams included: Elmira, Chenango Valley, Maine-Endwell, Newark Valley, Whitney Point, Lansing, Mexico, Waverly.
• Bronze: Deposit-Hancock, Unadilla Valley, Moravia, Harpursville-Afton.
