Norwich falls short after swimming close race with M-E Spartans
NORWICH – Maine-Endwell captured many first place finishes against the Lady Tornado varsity swimming and diving team, but Norwich didn’t go down easy as they lost 100-72.
Taking away 13 points that were handed to Maine-Endwell for diving, since Norwich does not have divers on their roster, the Tornado lost to the number three state ranked Spartans by a small margin of 15 points.
Starting off the meet with the usual 200 Yard Medley Relay, Norwich’s team of the Blaisure sisters, Margie Winter and Melissa Stroh placed second with a time of 2:02.80, just three seconds off the first place team held by the Spartans.
In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Norwich grabbed five team points to add to the final total. Emerson Burton took a second place finish in the event with teammate Lauren Llewellyn taking the fifth place spot.
Maya Blaisure showed well in her event of the 200 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:26.37, as Norwich again snagged five points in the event. Haley Shattuck finished three spots behind M. Blaisure with Jessie Giordano followed, taking sixth in the event.
Winter took top honors in the 50 Yard Freestyle sprint for Norwich with a time of 26.98. Kaitlyn Blaisure swam to a fourth place in the fast event as her time recorded was a 27.50. Joining Winter and K. Blaisure was Norwich youngster Angela Carlson, who finished with a fifth place time of 28.60. Carlson grabbed a point for the Lady Tornado to stay close to the Spartans point total.
In the 100 Yard Butterfly, Norwich took second with Winter, fifth with Shattuck and sixth place by Jazmine Potter.
Carlson, Stroh and Riley Revoir placed four-five-six in the 100 Yard Freestyle while Burton and Llewellyn took third and fifth in the long distance 500 Yard Freestyle.
Norwich swept the 100 Yard Backstroke event as K. Blaisure led with a time of 1:15.68 followed by Stroh and Abigail Natoli. The 100 Yard Breaststroke was also all Norwich as M. Balisure took the first place finish at 1:11.79 while Revoir finished behind her.
The Lady Tornado finished the evening taking first and second place in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The first place team was comprised of the K. Blaisure, Stroh, M. Blaisure and Winter. Shattuck, Burton, Maddie Loeffler and Llewellyn made up the second place team.
“I expected it to be a tough meet but we had some great races that allowed us to compete with them,” said Tornado Head Coach Saundra Gantt. “We accepted the non-league meet against them because we needed to swim a team of their caliber to prepare us for sectionals.”
Norwich is back in their home pool on Friday, September 30, against Section III opponent Holland-Patent in another non-league meet. The meet will start at 5:30 p.m.
