SHERBURNE – Recording three goals in a game is quite the achievement in itself, but what about recording a hat-trick in the first half?
That’s absolutely unheard of, right? Try telling that to Sherburne-Earlville’s Kyle Cole who was as smooth as silk, bagging three goals before the first half of play eclipsed, as he led his team to a 5-0 win over the visiting Afton-Harpursville Crimson Knights on Tuesday afternoon.
The Marauders set the tone of game early in the first half as Cole took matters into his own hands with just a minute and a half ticked off from the clock. S-E forward Edward Geier airmailed a pass to Cole who accurately delivered a header past A-H goalie Christian Noyes for the early 1-0 Marauder lead. This wouldn’t be the last time Cole provided a flash of his athleticism as he seemingly performed an instant replay, yet again delivering the masterful art of scoring off of headers. This time, Harrison Dubois got in on the action-claiming the assist on the play with the finesse pass, allowing space and time to Cole for the easy put in.
With a 2-0 lead already in the match, perhaps the most impressive feat by the Sherburne-Earlville offensive attack was over the final 2:30 left in the first half. Cole kicked off the start of the three-goal offensive onslaught for the Marauders by drilling his third and final goal of the game- effectively recording his hat-trick within the game. Next up to prove their offensive prowess was Owen Rodriguez who just as quickly scored an unassisted goal of his own. Speaking of assists, Harrison Dubois added to his stellar game recording a goal of his own to go along with his previously recorded assist from early in the contest.
However, giving credit where credit is rightfully due, the Afton-Harpursville defensive effort was much improved in the second half of play, as the Crimson Knights silenced the dialed in S-E offense in the second stanza.
The Marauders return to the field when they host Waterville on Thursday, September 28 with a 4:30 p.m. start time. Afton-Harpursville will see their next action when they travel to Greene (9-0 and ranked 5th in Class C for NYS) on Friday, September 29, at 5 p.m.
