Norwich SPCA's Name Your Cat's Price adoption event continues

NORWICH – If you've ever thought about adopting a cat, now might be the perfect time. The SPCA has adopted out more than 50 cats and kittens since the Name Your Cat's Price event started in June, but executive director Annette Clarke says there's no end in sight.

The SPCA still has over 130 cats and kittens to be adopted, and Clarke says "there's really something for everyone." The fee to adopt a kitten over 4 months is any monetary donation if it is spayed or neutered. If the cat needs altering, the fee is the cost of the surgery which is commonly $150.

"The idea of the event is to get the cats adopted as quickly as possible," says Clarke. She said it has been hard having so many cats, especially in what they call "kitten season." Clarke says they could adopt out 5 cats and get 10 more in the same day and they are now considered a "no-kill shelter, or low-kill in extreme cases." The amount of euthanasias has dropped more than 85% in the 4 years that Clarke has been working at the SPCA.

"Since Little Mews closed, we're getting all the animals instead of splitting them between two places," Clarke said. "But we have not had the euthanasia of a dog at all this year."

All pets available for adoption are on the SPCA website, which is optimized for phone and tablet use. There are pictures, short video clips, and descriptions of all animals.

Since there is no minimum for a monetary donation, Clarke said donations of cleaning products, paper towels, and trash bags would also be extremely helpful. The SPCA goes through 50,000 pounds of litter per year and about 1,500 rolls of paper towels.

There will be an event throughout the month of December called the Save A Life Program, where all monetary donations will be matched. Clarke hopes that people will save their donations until then in order to have a bigger impact.
