ENDWELL – All went according to plan this past weekend at Maine-Endwell’s Pete Matzke Invite for the Afton-Harpursville Crimson Knight, Matt Johnson.
As an established veteran runner within the Section IV Class D cross-country circuit, Johnson has earned the right to run with the big named schools within the section such as Owego and Maine-Endwell – the same two schools that also were in attendance at the Saturday, September 30, competition.
Johnson, serving as the only runner for Afton-Harpursville, placed fifth among the legion of Maine-Endwell and Owego Free Academy runners, finishing with a time of 17:29. Despite not taking the top spot, finishing first overall, Johnson’s performance sets himself in a nice category for a potential return to the NYSPHSAA State Championships once the Section IV State Qualifier comes around at the end of the month.
The Unadilla Storm, who were also in attendance at Saturday’s meet, had several athletes participating as well. For the boys varsity race, Josh Nogaret served as the only runner in the men’s field, finishing in 25th with a time of 19:07 out of the 54 runner field. On the girls side, UV had two competitors in Isabel Mendoza and Katelyn Dixson. Mendoza placed 29th out of the 45 runner field with a time of 22:40. Dixson, placed 44nd, recording a time of 30:01.
Claiming the wins in both the men’s and women’s race were from Maine-Endwell, Parker Stokes claimed the top spot for the men with a time of blazing quick time of 15:49 over the 5000m course – finishing over just over a minute before the next competitor finished. Alison Otis cruised to a first-place finish for the women in a time of 19:08, finishing 35 seconds before the rest of her competition.
The Unadilla Valley Storm return to the course when they travel on Wednesday, October 4, to Delaware Academy High School for a dual meet with a 4:15 p.m. start.
