SIDNEY – With the Harpursville-Hornets battling with Vestal – and with Vestal claiming first place – it was between the host team in Sidney and Sherburne-Earlville to fight for the coveted third place spot.
Vestal took first in the 2017 Sidney Field hockey tournament when they downed Harpursville in overtime at 2-1.
It was two second half goals from Sidney that helped Sidney squeeze by in the consolation game played on Saturday, September 30.
Scoring for Sidney, Olivia DeMott took in the first goal with an unassisted shot, while Adrienne Paternoster hit Mallory Stillman later on in the second half for a second goal to top off the home win.
The problem for S-E, they had little to no offense as the lady Marauders managed to snag no shots on goal and just one corner. Sidney dominated the stat line with 13 shots and 14 corners. Makayla Phillips of Sidney recorded no saves in goal – with Jade Diamond of S-E having 11 saves.
Notably, two players from the S-E squad were awarded All-Tournament honors – Natalie Stewart (Midfielder) and Jade Diamond (Goalie).
Next up for Sherburne-Earlville Field Hockey (0-3 league, 3-8 overall), the team will be on the road next for a game against Canastota on Tuesday, October 3, at 4:30 p.m.
