Vikings top GMU due to big game from Tanner Costa
GILBERTSVILLE – The Vikings boys soccer team invaded Gilbertsville this past weekend for a 2-0 road win over Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton.
The Vikings of Otselic Valley, led by senior captain Tanner Costa, embarked on a journey to take on GMU, to which they did with two first half goals.
“It ended up pretty even on paper when you compared the shots, save, and corners. However, we finished on top,” said Otselic Valley head coach Jacob Preston.
“Tanner Costa had a great game for OV. He passed when he needed to and shot when he was supposed to, Costa is a senior captain and he lived up to that titled tonight.”
Scoring first was Costa, in the first half of play, when he took a corner kick to which GMU attempted to head it out and Costa one time volleyed it off the left post to score.
The second score, coming from Costa as well through an assist to teammate Derek Stoddard.
“Costa contained a GMU defender who had the ball down in their own end and waited for the defender to make a mistake,” said coach Preston. “Costa stole the ball and played a perfect ball to Derek Stoddard who one touch finished.”
With 14 shots on goal for either team, 2-0 shutout came down to solid defense and goalkeeper play. Notably, OV had nine saves for Garrett Forrest, and two corners – while the GMU goalkeeper managed just seven saves and one corner.
“The back four, Micah Lyon, Jonah VanVoorhis, Devin Stone, and Jimmy Ossont along with goalie, Garrett Forrest all contributed to a clean sheet,” said coach Preston. “Garrett Wood and Clayton O’Hara did a great job controlling the middle of the field.”
Next up for Otselic Valley boys soccer (2-5 CCL, and 4-6-1 overall), will be playing next against McGraw, on Monday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m.
