Lady Trojans take Rome tournament championship, emerging unscored upon
ROME – Traveling out of section to play foreign teams isn’t something that happens often in Section IV high school field hockey – but when Greene does, they simply dominate the tournament.
Winning the 2017 Rome Free Academy field hockey tournament, and scoring 10 goals while giving up none on the weekend – the 2017 lady Trojans are marching.
“We played hard, the first night we were a little off. Our passing and receiving weren’t as crisp. Saturday, we were much better,” said Greene head coach Christine McCabe. “We could’ve finished more, we had a lot of opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on. Between the two days we have five different girls scoring and others assisting. We had a lot of corners, scoring three goals on corners. It was nice to play out of section so we could see different things that we need to work on and keep improving.”
On Friday, September 29, Greene took on Liverpool, in what turned out to be a 6-0 beat down by the Trojans.
In the win – which saw Greene storm to a 4-0 halftime – McKenna Sergi and Claire Moxley each scored two goals apiece. Leah Decker and Chrissy Boeltz each added their own goal while Jessica Unkel added one assist.
Greene attacked Liverpool on Friday – a day where coach McCabe said her team wasn’t playing their best – rained down 18 shots on goal and 11 corners. While Liverpool snagged three shots and three corners. Brooke Austin, Greene’s goalkeeper, made three saves while Liverpool’s goalie made nine.

Advancing to Saturday, September 30, Greene faced off against host Rome Free Academy in the finals – emerging the victors at 4-0.
A big first half push from Greene resulted in a 4-0 halftime score – where the two squads stalemated in the second half of action.
Scoring a hat-trick in the finals of the tournament was Jessica Unkel – with McKenna Sergi having one assist and Selena Emery taking two assists.
“We played well in the second half, we were down there most of the time, we just didn’t put the ball in,” said coach McCabe.
Greene again outshot their competition, this time at 17 to two – where they also managed 12 corners to Rome’s one. With 11 goalkeeper saves – and four defensive saves – Austin was asked to make just two to ensure the shutout win.
After starting the 2017 season 1-2 overall, Greene’s field hockey team has climbed to a 4-1 league record with an 8-3 overall record. Next up for the lady Trojans they will be home against Vestal on Tuesday, October 2, at 6:45 p.m.
