Blue Devils steal the crown for the 9th annual Greene soccer tournament
GREENE – The perfect season is down the drain, Greene’s previously undefeated and state-ranked boys soccer team fell victim to the Chenango Forks Blue Devils at 3-1 in the finals of their home tournament on Saturday, September 30.
However, despite the loss, a devastating thing whether it is number one or 10, Greene is hoping to be better off with the loss – learning and continuing to grow from the minor setback.
The opening round of the tournament, played in Greene on Friday, September 29, saw Greene take down Sherburne-Earlville at 7-0 and Chenango Forks defeat Afton at 8-0.

Consolation game: Sherburne-Earlville defeats Afton-Harpursville 2-0
The Sherburne-Earlville Marauders met the Afton-Harpursville Crimson Knights in the consolation game of the Greene Soccer Tournament, played prior to the finals on Saturday, September 30.
“The Marauders did well to possess and move the ball around the field of play in the effort to create chances, but the Crimson Knight defense proved difficult to unlock, due to the stout play of Christian Noyes in goal,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Michael Rodriguez. “It would not be until the final minutes of play in the first half that a Harrison DuBois cross found Kyle Cole near the top of the penalty, whose shot caught the post ricocheting into the goal.”
Cole’s score was unanswered by Afton, as S-E took the 1-0 lead into the half.
Sherburne-Earlville managed 13 shots on goal and eight corners in their win. While the Crimson Knights had just one shot on goal and four corners.
“The Marauder lead was doubled midway through the second half when Kyle Cole assisted Nathan Morgan for his first varsity goal,” said coach Rodriguez. “Christian Noyes was partially screened and saw the shot go by too late.”
Sherburne-Earlville finished off a long week of play, taking third in the tournament and holding a week record of 2-1-1.
The Sherburne-Earlville boys will get some time now to regroup, playing next this coming Friday, October 6, at home against Adirondack at 4:30 p.m.
