Greene holds on late to edge Golden Bears at home

GREENE – The Vestal Golden Bears field hockey squad wasted no time in their game plan, hoping to push the mighty Trojans to their limit and get the upset win.
However, the matchup on Tuesday showed Greene field hockey is regarded as a powerhouse in the high school field hockey world year-in and year-out.
Greene edged Vestal at 2-1 for the close win – taking goals from McKenna Sergi and Jess Unkel with Sergi having the assist to Unkel.
Sydney Washburn scored for Vestal in the tough loss.
The stats for both Greene and Vestal gave a good indication as the teams each had seven corners, and Greene having eight shots on goal to Vestal’s seven.
One shot on goal proved to be the difference in the Tuesday night showdown – as both goalkeepers secured four saves as well – Brooke Austin of Greene and Christa Wickman of Vestal.
“Vestal really came to play tonight. They hustled hard the entire game and had us on our heels at first,” said Greene head coach Christine McCabe. “Our defense stayed tough when needed and we were able to hold off an offensive push by Vestal at the end to win it. This game showed us areas we need to work on, but we are ready to correct them and prepare for Maine-Endwell on Thursday.
Greene field hockey (9-3 overall), will next play home against Maine-Endwell on Thursday, October 5, at 7 p.m.
