Chenango Valley take the title at Oxford Soccer Tournament this weekend

OXFORD – Last Thursday and Saturday evenings were consumed by soccer in Oxford. The Lady Blackhawks held their annual soccer tournament and hosted Chenango Valley Warriors, Schenevus Dragons, and Greene Trojans. In the opening round, Chenango Valley faced the Dragons while Greene took on the host Blackhawks.
First Round
The Lady Warriors had no issues getting to the championship game of the tournament as they opened the first round taking 32 shots and finding the net seven times in their shutout win over the Dragons.
Scoring three in the first half, Chenango Valley showed no signs of letting up.
The Warriors tacked on another four goals in the second to get to their final tally of seven. Leading Chenango Valley was Alaina Carman with a hat trick and an extra. Teammates Sara Marinaro, Mallorie Turner and Kayla Lopez each added one goal. Lopez and Anna Siline assisted on two of the seven goals while Kerri Hayes’ passes connected with teammates three times.
Both teams waiting for who they faced in the consolation and championship games as Oxford and Greene played after them on Thursday, September 28.
The two teams had met in the opening round of the Greene Girls Varsity Soccer Tournament earlier this season. That thrilling match-up ended 0-0 and Oxford advanced on 3-2 penalty kicks.
This time around, Greene got revenge and took the 2-1 win home to advance to the championship game after another exciting game that went the distance plus two extra sessions.
Oxford’s Kaylin Tefft found colleague Ellie Ryan for the team’s goal to take the 1-0 lead.
The Trojans weren’t going to go down easy to the team just up the road as Alyssa Sands tied it as her ball past Blackhawk keeper Lexi Kohlhepp.
Lucinda Lee scored an unassisted goal in the first overtime, giving Greene the lead. Her goal proved to be the game winner as Oxford was unable to net another before the second extra 10 minutes ran out.
Oxford headed to the consolation game against Schenevus while Greene and Chenango Valley squared off for tournament bragging rights.
Consolation Game
The Lady Dragons came out in the game with some fire to grab a third place finish over the host team, beating Oxford 5-0.
Schenevus fired 15 attempts at the Blackhawk goalie Kohlhepp, throughout the game. Alexis Hults netted a hat trick in the contest while her teammate Angela Compotielo added two more for the Dragons.
Oxford was able to get a shot off but Autumn Jones stopped it to give herself and Schenevus the shutout victory.
The Dragons’ Alexis Hults and Taylor Knapp were announced as a part of the All-Tournament team. The host Blackhawks also had selections in Lexi Kohlhepp and Destiny Beang.
Championship Game
Chenango Valley kept their dominant ways as they took home the title, topping the Lady Trojans 7-1.
Firing on all cylinders, the Warriors took 23 shots during the game. Six of the shots found the back of the net during the first half.
Greene scored one goal in the second half to avoid a shutout as Jade Whitney connected on a pass to Sands. Sands was an All-Tournament selection for Greene as she had two of the Trojans’ three goals.
The Warriors’ Carman recored a second hat trick and an assist for her stat line. Teammate Marinaro added two while Lopez and Maria Forbidussi tacked on one each. Hayes and Turner added one assist apiece to their tournament totals.
Greene’s Haley DeJager and Lucinda Lee joined Sans for All-Tournament honors while The Warriors’ Sara Marinaro, Alaina Carman, Kayla Lopez and Kerri Hayes all received selections.
