NHS students receive Star of Life Award in wake of medical emergency
NORWICH – When a medical emergency arose in a Norwich High School study hall on September 20, three quick thinking NHS students played a vital role in defusing the scene until Norwich EMS arrived.
In recognition of their diligence, Chloe Hyder, Hannah Baker, and Justin Bates were each presented the Star of Life Award by members of the Norwich Fire Department during small ceremony on Thursday, October 5.
NHS Principal Kisten Giglio said, "We had a medical emergency a few weeks ago and these three fine young men and women stepped right in to help.
"What was even more telling was when the rescue squad came that day and said, 'I don't know who did this, but he was put into classic rescue position.' They did that. So they are here to receive the Star of Life Award."
Family members of Chloe, Hannah, and Justin attended the presentation of the Star of Life Award on Thursday and were informed about the award's meaning.
"This is an award we established several years ago, and it hasn't been given out very frequently," said Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo. "We kind of hold onto it for positive things in the community. The Star of Life is a symbol for EMS and life-saving, and this is our way of recognizing when people do good things in a medical emergency."
Each of the six points on the Star of Life has a meaning: Early detection, early reporting, early response, on-scene care, care in transit, transfer to definitive care.
In this case, it was Chloe, Hannah, and Justin's quick thinking and on-scene care that played an important role until EMS arrived.
"I think in this day and age when we tend to focus on the negative things, the fire department, myself, and the guys that were working that day wanted to recognize these three individuals for the care they provided," said Chawgo.
