Norwich Fire Department to host annual open house Thursday

NORWICH – Norwich Fire Department will host its annual open house this Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of National Fire Prevention Week.
The event will feature a number of demonstrations, educational handouts courtesy of Preferred Mutual, flu shots courtesy of Chenango County Health Department, and plenty of activities for kids.
"It's a good event for the public to come to, there will be a lot of useful reminders about fire safety, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide, all those kinds of things," said Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo.
Among the activities available for children will be fire truck rides, a hose house for kids to shoot water at, and more.
City of Norwich Codes Enforcement Officer Jason Lawrence said a new attraction at this year's open house will be an educational simulation illustrating how smoke detectors work, and how a fire progresses in a house that has its doors open versus its doors closed.
"We've built an 8x12 ft. building and we're going to simulate one, how smoke detectors work, and two, how a fire progresses," said Lawrence. "One of the things we'll show people is, we're going to have small fire in the corner with a four foot section of the building open, and then also with the four foot section closed. So it simulates how a fire would react with your bedroom door closed versus if it were open.
"The career firemen have assisted greatly in building the display. It will be very educational."
The open house is free and open to the public, and will take place in the Norwich Fire Station's main bay located at 31 East Main Street in Norwich.
