WHITNEY POINT- On Tuesday, the Norwich Purple Tornado, Harpursville-Afton and Unadilla Valley Storm sent their respective athletes to compete at the annual Whitney Point Invitational. While Unadilla Valley and Harpursville-Afton did not bring a complete girls or boys team with them to the meet, the Norwich Purple Tornado brought a full boys team to the race.
The NHS boys placed sixth out of the nine teams in attendance, scoring 161 points. The first Tornado runner to score for his team was Noah Bufalini placing 16th in a time of 19:03.9. Zayn Harper was the next NHS harrier to cross the tape, finishing 32nd in a time of 20:29.3. John Matlack-Gray was the third finisher donning the purple and white with a time of 21:13.9 for a 41st place finish. Jacob Russell and Andrew Meccariello finished back to back of each other, with Russell placing 59th, and Meccariello claiming a 60th place finish. Russell ran a time of 22:42.7 and Meccariello found himself less than a second behind with a time of 22:43.4. This effectively completed the Norwich High School boy’s varsity race finishers for the invitational.
While UV did not have any male competitors of their own, another Chenango County athlete joined the fray, and almost made it out on top of the heap in the process. Harpursville-Afton runner Matthew Johnson placed second on the afternoon out of the 77 runner field. Johnson who has had a strong season thus far, and will assuredly find himself in the mix to run in at the New York State Cross-Country Championships once again, finished in a time of 17:22.9 over the hilly course.
In the girls varsity race, Unadilla Valley’s Isabel Mendoza claimed the top finish out of the Chenango County competitors, placing 19th in a time of 24:10.1. Norwich’s Adrienne Vedder placed 32nd with a time of 25:50.6, being the sole representative of her school.
The girls from Harpursville-Afton, however, proved to be much more bountiful, despite not having a complete team, H-A had three girls cross the finish line. McKayla Payne was the first H-A runner to finish the race, finishing strong for a time of 24:58.7 for a 29th finish. Mia Ambrocio was the next subsequent H-A runner to sprint across the finish line, placing 36th on the afternoon claiming a time of 27:33.5 Logan Ives proved to be the final Chenango County girls to finish the race, placing 45th in a time of 29:50 flat.
The Purple Tornado, Unadilla Valley and Harpursville-Afton return to the course this Saturday October 21st when they travel to Appleby Elementary school in Marathon for the annual Marathon Invitational, with the first race scheduled for 9:30.
