Republican committee congratulates Genute, but is unable to endorse him at meeting

NORWICH – The Chenango Republican County Committee held a meeting Wednesday to vote on endorsing Republican primary winner, Michael J. Genute, for Norwich City Judge, but the group was unable to hold a vote and attending members instead offered their congratulations to the candidate.

“The Chenango Republican County Committee met October 18 at 7 p.m. The meeting, which was not open to the public, was held at the Norwich Town Hall. A quorum was not present. No official business was conducted. Without a quorum, a formal endorsement for Mike Genute, the winner of the Republican Primary, was not possible,” said the group in a statement issued by Committee Member Matthew Caldwell after the meeting.

This is the second time in October the committee has scheduled a meeting to vote on endorsing Genute and were unable to get enough members to attend for a vote. Republican Chairman Tom Morrone, who was also at the meeting, explained that in order to hold a vote 51 percent of the members were needed under election laws.

Committee Secretary Sheila Marshman said 17 members showed up for Wednesday's meeting, and many of those present congratulated Genute.

“The city members of the Chenango Republican County Committee that were present want to extend their congratulations to Mike Genute,” stated Matthew Caldwell after the meeting. "The city representatives congratulate Mike Genute as our candidate for city court judge.”

By a difference of 9 ballots, Genute was declared the winner of the Sept. 12 Republican primary for Norwich City Court Judge against his opponent Steven G. Natoli.

Out of the 609 voters casting ballots in the primary, a 1.5 percent margin of victory will ensure Genute's name will appear next to the Republican Party line on the general election ballot.

However following such a tight election, it appears unlikely he will get an official endorsement from the committee.

Asked if the committee would attempt another vote to endorse Genute, Marshman replied, “Is there a need to request an endorsement? No.”

“I would assume there is no need,” she said, “Congratulations to Mike Genute.”

Morrone previously explained that though Genute won the primary, members of the committee are not automatically obligated to endorse him. He said anyone can run for office in a primary and win the Republican ticket and be placed on the ballot, but it was up to the committee to decide if they would or would not offer their own endorsements of the candidate. Getting such an endorsement can include financial support.

Genute had previously commented he couldn't recall a situation were a Republican primary winner wasn't endorsed by the committee.

Contacted Thursday, Genute said, “I'm grateful for the acknowledgment. I look forward to the general election and the voters having the opportunity to choose a judge they feel has the most relevant experience for the position.”

The general election is November 7. The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
