Yellowjackets spoil senior night for Norwich Tornado volleyball

NORWICH – Oneonta came to Norwich Thursday evening with hopes to spoil senior night for the Purple Tornado volleyball team and fans. The Yellowjackets succeeded, winning in four sets behind the 40 assists of Christina Mattocks, Oneonta’s lone setter.
The two teams played even in the first set as they battled hard and rallied to a final score of 25-21, in favor of Oneonta.
Carrying the momentum from the first set into the second, the Lady Yellowjackets dominated on their way to a game score of 25-11.
Norwich was on the ropes of a sweep for the match heading into the third set. The Lady Tornado led for the entire third game by no less than five points. Until late in the set, when Oneonta picked up their game and began a rally.
The Yellowjackets came back to within one point before Norwich put them away with the final point of the set as they took the intense third game with a score of 25-23.
In the fourth set, Oneonta and Norwich against showed their evenly matched skills again until late in the game when the Yellowjackets opened up a lead that the Tornado were unable to recover from. Oneonta finished the fourth set, 25-18, for the final game of the match.
Layla Burton recored 14 digs in the contest for Norwich while teammates Gabby Eddy (12) and Alexis Taylor (15) finished with a combined total of 27 kills.
LeahAnne Humphrey, who was one of the senior recognized before the match, assisted on 12 points for the Tornado. Her senior class peer Kalie Binelli finished with a stat line of seven aces, one assist, two kills and seven digs while Jazmin Rodriguez, also a senior, recorded two kills and two digs.
Oneonta was led by Ally Baker’s 11 kills, Lizzy Serafin’s four blocks, Grace Lyall’s 10 digs and Allys Calhoun’s six aces.
Norwich will travel to (school) on Tuesday at (Time) for their last regular season match of the 2017 season. Following that, Norwich will have STAC playoffs before the Section IV tournament.
