Afton and Greene field hockey to meet in Section IV Class C semifinals
Greene fights for 5-1 over Deposit-Hancock
GREENE – The final score and stats do not represent the way the game way played as the Lady Trojans defeated Deposit-Hancock on Thursday in the quarterfinal Section IV match up, 5-1.
Both teams receieved a bye in the first round, leading to the quarterfinal battle that was 1-0 at the half, in favor of Greene.
But the Lady Trojans demanded more as they added four more goals in the second half.
“Deposit is a very aggressive and skilled team so we had to make a few adjustments at half, which helped us score more in the second,” said Greene head coach Christine McCabe.
The Eagles lone goal was scored by Emily Raymond, whose shot was the only one fired in the contest for Deposit-Hancock. Her shot passed by Trojans goalie Brooke Austin in the second half.
Jessica Unkel led the way for Greene as she scored two of the five goals and assisted on another. Her teammate Madison Rice also tacked on a goal and an assist in the contest for the home team.
“The entire game was a battle,” said McCabe. “We definitely had to fight for everything we got tonight.”
Afton sails to quarterfinal win
AFTON – Taking a total of 17 penalty corners and 14 shots throughout the game, the number one seed Afton Crimison Knights cruised to a 4-1 win over Sidney.
The Lady Crimison Knights had a different player score each of the four goals in the contest.
The only goal scored by Sidney was recorded by Olivia DeMott on an assist from Mallory Stillman. Her teammate, Makayla Phillips, stopped 10 of Afton’s 14 in front of the net.
Casey East, Madison Baciuska, Janelle Volk and Sam Schoelier each scored one goal for the home team. Afton’s keeper, Jordan Nichols, saved one in the contest.
Looking forward to semifinals
Afton and Greene have faced eachother twice already this season as they both prepare for the third, scheduled for Tuesday with Afton hosting.
In both games, Afton has scored the W (3-2, 5-2) and will be looking to capture the third to move on to the Section IV Class C finals.
Greene is the underdog in the match up and is looking to play the role of villian in Afton’s 2017 season.
“It’s a great matchup and both teams are going to be competitive,” said Afton’s Assistant Coach Casey Conover. “Both teams have D-1 athletes on the teams. It’s going to be a good game.”
“We definitely have some fine tuning we need to do in terms of our skill and team play,” said McCabe. “We want to sharpen up our defense while continuing to grow our offensive movement. We also want to continue to have our midfielders involved offensively which will allow our forwards to work more in the circle and around the goal.”
The winner will move on to face either number two-seed and defending state champion Whitney Point or cinderella six-seed Moravia, who topped three-seed and field hockey powerhouse Marathon. The Section IV Class C championship game is scheduled for Saturday, October 28 at 7 p.m. in Maine-Endwell.
