Trojans take down Eagles in 4-5 match up in Class C quarterfinals

DEPOSIT – Despite Deposit-Hancock’s early 14-0 lead, the Greene Trojans gained their composure and dominated the second half on their way to 21-14 upset in the contest.
Coy Austin capped off an unanswered 14 points for the Trojans with an eight yard score and the win Friday night.
His touchdown was the result of Greene’s Mitchell Walter kicking the ball onside following a Trojans touchdown in the third and recovering the ball himself, setting up the drive for Austin’s game winning TD.
The Eagles struck first, opening with a Jackson Miller 12 yard run. The extra point attempt was no good, setting up the 6-0 score in favor of Deposit-Hancock after one quarter.
Greene answered in the second quarter with Nate Erickson punching it from two yards out. Walter’s extra point try was successful, giving the Trojans a one point lead. But only temporarily.
Miller tacked on his second score of the contest with a seven yard run. This time, the Eagles coaching staff decided to go for two and it paid off as Miller ran it in. Taking the lead back, Deposit-Hancock went into the intermission with a 14-7 score.
Coming out at half, Greene took control of the third, ultimately winning the game in the quarter.
“We played a tremendous second half after being nervous to start the game,” said Trojans’ head coach Dave Gorton. “Our players made a lot of plays.”
Making those plays were on the defensive side of the ball for the Trojans was Justin Carman had 12 tackles and a forced fumble on defense. His colleague, Logan Kennedy tipped a pass thrown by the Eagles quarterback Darren Shaver that led to a big Erickson interception.
His pick helped set up his second touchdown of the game, another two yard run that crossed the goal line when Greene needed a score. Walters’ extra point field goal sailed through the uprights, tying the score again for the second time.
It was then when Gorton and his staff choose to kick the ball onside, setting up Walters’ recovery and the Austin score.
Erickson ended the evening with 141 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns. Teammate and quaterback Austin ran for 72 yards in 13 attempts and a touchdown while throwing 18 yards on two receptions and one interception.
“Our offensive line dominated the second half. We had a touchdown called back and had other things go against us, but the game was won in the third quarter,” said Gorton of his teams play in the third.
Greene will face one seed Sidney in the Class D semifinals on Saturday, October 28 at noon. The game will take place at Binghamton Alumni Stadium, a neutral site for both teams.
The two teams met earlier this season with Sidney coming out on top 28-22. Gorton stated after that game September that his team moved the ball well against the Warriors. The Trojans will look to do the same Saturday.
