GREENE – The Trojans scored first in Wednesday’s Section IV Class C semifinal game but their opponents, the Bobcats of Lansing got the last word as they were victors two-seeded Greene 2-1.
Greene’s Bradley Taft found his colleague Calob Davenport, who then sent a low, line-drive shot from the left side of the field to the far post and into the side netting. The Trojans took a 1-0 lead halfway through the first half of the contest.
The Trojans carried that lead into the intermission because of Greene’s keeper Kevin Gyurik, who made some incredible saves to keep Lansing at bay.
But 5:22 into the second half, the Bobcats Nic Whittaker delivered a ball to the six-yard box in front of Lansing’s goal. That’s when teammate Nick Parkes got to the ball first and used his head to fire a shot past Gyurick, tying the game at one apiece.
About 12 and a half minutes later, Whittaker and Parkes connected again on a free kick from near midfield. This time, Parkes couldn’t get to it in time for a good angle at the goal. He was, however able to get a foot on the ball and he directed towards another Bobcat.
Enter Langston Hopkins. Hopkins, using his head, found the back of the net, giving Lansing the 2-1 advantage.
Lansing had an opportunity to tack on another goal, but Guyrick saved Hopkins shot with just under four and half to play.
Greene could not connect on any attempts to even the score and force overtime.
The Trojans end their amazing 2017 season with a final record of 16-2 and currently ranked number three in the New York State Sportswriters Association Class C Poll. Lansing, who is ranked eight this week, will move on to face one-seed and No. 2 Seton Catholic Central Saints on Saturday in Oneonta.
