SIDNEY – After a 40 point first half deficit, many would think a game is out of reach and over. Don’t tell that to the Bainbridge-Guilford football team, who scored 32 unanswered points in the second half, nearly pulling off one of the biggest comebacks Friday night.
The Sidney Warriors scored all five their touchdowns in the first half, three in the first quarter alone, through the air from the arm of quarterback Darren Smith.
One play following the kick-off by the Bobcats, Smith connected with one of his receivers, Liam Matthews for 65 yards and six points. The Warriors went for two, as they did on every touchdown, as Smith passed to Ethan Finch. Finch completed the catch, giving Sidney the 8-0 lead only 10 seconds into the game.
The second touchdown, Smith found Brandon Evans for a 27 yard touchdown reception. Finch converted the two-point conversion by rushing from three yards.
While Sidney was piling on the points, Bainbridge-Guilford stayed in every play, hoping to catch a break on either side of the ball.
However, they wouldn’t as Sidney’s Smith passed to Evans again from 31 yards away with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter. Reggie Jimenez had his number called for the two-point try and didn’t miss his opportunity with Sidney totalling 24-0 at the end of the first stanza.
Warriors showed no signs of letting up in the second, scoring from 79 yards on another Smith-Matthews connection and Matthews tacked on the extra two by running it across the goal line.
B-G put together a nice second quarter drive, getting into the red zone before giving the ball back to Sidney. Defensively, the Bobcats had the Warriors in a good position for a safety or a possible touchdown on a caused turnover.
But Finch dashed their hopes after making ‘play of the year’ type of play with his one handed grab and ran for a 96 yard score. Two Bobcats defenders were near by to make a play, but after colliding with each other, Finch was able to make the catch and run the length of the field with no one able to catch him.
Jimenez punched in for the two point conversion for Sidney’s fifth time converting on the night.
40-0 at the half, B-G Head Coach Israel Lorimer, went into the locker room saying simply, “Well that didn’t go our way.”
Never yelling at his kids, Lormier continued to say “Listen, we are breakdown each play, play each play and we are going to go out there and try to win the quarter. Then we are going to try and win the half.”
And that Bainbridge-Guilford did.
It took a few minutes to get going but once they were able to stop Sidney on the Warriors first drive of the half, the Bobcats saw the momentum slowly swinging in their favor.
Able to score on their second drive with a two yard run by running back Ben Bivar, B-G started showing signs of life. Bivar also rushed for the two point conversion.
At this point the third quarter ended and the score was 40-8, heavily in Sidney’s favor.
But the Bobcats were able to stop the Warriors yet again, eventually leading to the first points of the fourth by B-G’s quarterback Trevor Halaquist on a three yard run. Making the score 40-16 was Halaquist, converting the two point attempt.
Going between the decision of kicking the ball onside or deep, Lorimer chose deep.
Again coming up with a defensive stop, the Bobcats took advantage and put more points on the scoreboard. Halaquist running it in for the second time but from 52 yards away. Halaquist also tacked on the two points on a rushing play.
Now the score is 40-24. Still a 16 point deficit, Sidney didn’t want to chance anything and put their starters back in after mixing their line-ups.
However, their starters weren’t able to obtain the onside kick from Halaquist, who also kicks for the Bobcats, giving the ball back to B-G with good field position.
Scoring once more, Halaquist connected with Cody Ferrara for a two yard touchdown reception and Ben Bivar ran in the two point conversion. All of this happening with six seconds remaining in the contest.
Hoping to recover and try the hail-mary pass to tie the game with no time left, Lormier instructed Halaquist to again attempt the onside kick. Unfortunately, Bainbridge-Guilford was unable to recover, ending the game with a final of 40-32.
“Pretty crazy game. I have been around and have watched a lot of football games and I don’t know if ever remember being a part of or seeing anything quite like this game,” said Lorimer as he was describing the game.
Sidney’s Smith finished the game with 317 yards through the air with seven completions on his 16 attempts.
Halaquist ended the night 14 for 28 with 89 yards passing and ran for 125 yards on 20 carriers.
The Bobcats will end their season with a home game against Thomas A. Edison on Friday night at 7 p.m.
Sidney will move onto the semifinals of Section IV against Greene. Their game is being played on Saturday with kick-off at Noon at Binghamton Alumni Stadium. The two teams have met once already this season with Sidney capturing the 28-22 win.
