Crusaders hoping to bring home boys and girls soccer ESCAL titles Saturday

NORWICH – This Saturday in McGraw, both the Valley Heights Crusader boys and girls soccer teams face-off against the Eagles of Syracuse Christian Academy for the Empire State Christian Athletic League championships. For both programs, Saturday’s title game will be the third time this season VHCA and Syracause have squared off against each other.
The Lady Crusaders have split wins this season with Syracuse, losing the first 2-0 before getting a 2-0 victory over the Eagles.
In the first game, Head Coach Eliza Gieger stated that she was missing two key players. One of those players is Emily Davis, plagued with an ankle injury earlier this season but has recently shown that same injury no longer bothers her.
In game two against Syracuse, Davis was still on a playing time restriction as Gieger was trying not to push the injury if it was not complete ready. But Davis proved she was a factor in the game, assisting a goal to her teammate Macey Montgomery and netting a goal of her own.
In the most recent games, Davis’ shots found the back of the net five times from all angles of the field against Corning Christian Academy, and scored a goal in the semifinal upset win over the top-seeded Finger Lakes.
Knowing this same information, Syracuse will be paying close attention to Davis.
Enter Macey Montgomery. Gieger believes that even those she is only a sophmore, Montgomery will have a game against the Eagles as they are not expecting much from her.
“She has had a quiet role this season, but has starting make her presence on the team known to opponents a little bit more each game,” said Gieger.
On the Boys side, it’s a match-up of number one and number two in the league.
Again, both teams have met already twice this season, but the undefeated Eagles have taken both wins. The first game was 5-0 dominant win for Syracuse. In the second game, VHCA showed signs of improvement, scoring two goals but still lowing to the undefeated Eagles.
In order to win, Head Coach Keith Van Althuis stated his team will have to play more a defensive game while looking for their breakout opportunity to score.
The Crusaders have their eye on Eagles midfielder Isaac Depuy. “He’s been one of the best players in the league for a lot of years,” said Van Althuis. “He can do everything; a very whole player.”
If they can hold him to a few shots, VHCA has a good shot to win.
The other person they need to have a good game against is Syracuse’s keeper Fredette. Not allowing many pass him this season, the Crusaders were able to get two the last time they played.
Offensively speaking, Van Althuis stated “I really need my front line to get a break. Our defense has held strong all season and that helps produce the success we’ve had up front.”
The Lady Crusaders will kick-off the championship double header at 11 a.m. with the boys schedule to start immediately after.
