Maureen Byrne: Democratic candidate
With general elections days away, here's one final look at the three candidates in the run for Norwich City Court Judge. City court judge is an elected position held for the last 17 years by the Hon. James Downey, who is retiring at the end of this year. The candidates are Mike Genute (R), Maureen Byrne (D), and Steve Natoli (I). The 10-year term pays a salary of $108,800. The general election will take place on Tuesday, November 7.
Maureen Byrne is a local attorney running for Norwich City Court Judge.
Byrne is the Democratic candidate in the city court judge race. A Norwich native and graduate of Norwich High School, Byrne received her undergraduate degree from Nazareth College and her law degree from Notre Dame Law School.
After receiving her degree in law, Byrne worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Monroe County, before joining the Rochester Department of Law in the litigation department.
In 1995, Byrne returned to Norwich where she opened her own law practice the following year in 1996.
In 2001, Byrne was appointed acting city court judge after Judge Joseph Brillinger's departure from city limits.
"I feel that the experience [as acting Norwich City Court Judge] has given me a level of preparedness for the job," said Byrne. "I can anticipate some of the recurring issues, and I also feel I benefited from judicial training that they give judges every year.
"People who come before a judge have problems, or they wouldn't be in the court to begin with. I feel that you need to get to the root cause of why they are there, and that was my reason for getting into this race; I felt it was a call to action. Norwich is a great city but we have a serious drug problem here, as does every other city, village, or town in the country. I think sometimes because Norwich is small, it seems magnified. But I think because we're small, we ought to be able to fix it.
"My years of experience have taught me you have to get to the root cause of the problem, because if you don't, people are going to keep coming back to court.
"I view this opportunity as a call to service. I feel I can do some good for the Norwich community. The extend of my legal background and prior judicial experience brings a level of preparedness to this important role."
