Lady Bobcats snag Class D final spot

BAINBRIDGE – After win all games on Thursday night, Bainbridge-Guilford volleyball secured the top spot in the Section IV Class D best-of-five final on Saturday afternoon. Oxford and Unadilla Valley also participated in the match and faced each other in the last round of the pool play semifinals. The two teams split with UV grabbing a 25-17 win in game one and the Blackhawks taking game two 25-22.
“It was great to host the section IV Class D sectional semifinal pool play,” said B-G head coach Tami Selfridge. “We look forward to playing Candor on Saturday as they will be great competition for us. They play a game similar to ours and push us to play at a higher level. I will look to all my girls to focus and play their game on Saturday as we did against Candor this evening.”
Round 1; B-G vs Oxford
Bainbridge-Guilford had control in both games as they took down Oxford 25-10 in the first and 25-9 in the second game. The Bobcats recorded a total of 16 aces between the two games.
Round 2; UV vs Candor
Unadilla Valley gave Candor a little trouble but Candor won both games, including a score of 25-17 in one game.
Round 3; B-G vs UV
With only a three point differential to start the first game, the Bobcats took went on a 19-9 run, winning the game 25-13. Starting game two with a 7-0 run by the Lady Bobcats, UV fought back by scoring the next four straight points. But when Bainbridge-Guilford took their last serve, they finished the set with 13 consecutive points and a final score of 24-14.
Round 4; Candor vs Oxford
Oxford scored the first point in game one but Candor’s Megan Henry controlled the serve for six points including an ace, bringing the score to 7-1. Oxford closed the gap, scoring the next five but Candor finished the set with a 25-9 score as Braelyn Hornick served six aces. Game two was all Candor as they cruised to an 11-0 lead early and won the game 25-8.
Round 5; B-G vs Candor
Erica Selfridge began with the serve in game one for the Bobcats. During her service, Bainbridge-Guilford scored the first six points of the set. That’s when the Indians’ head coach Pam Quinlan called a timeout to regroup her players. It worked briefly as Candor scored two points back-to-back but sending a kill attempt out of bounds gave the serve back to the Bobcats. With a six point lead, B-G’s Alexis Carr smacked home a kill to give the Bobcats game point. They went on to win the game 25-8. Game two started out close, as the score became 5-3 quickly. That’s when Bainbridge-Guilford turned their play up a notch and scored five straight. Hornick saved two points for Candor as she dove on two consecutive plays, recoring a dig on each in a good volley between the two teams. Eventually B-G won the point and crusied to the 25-11 game two win, securing the spot in the finals on Saturday. They will rematch with Candor, as Candor finished second with a record of 4-2. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Round 6; UV vs Oxford
The two teams split the match – one win a piece – as the two teams played in the closest games all night.
