Norwich Tornado and Forks Blue Devils to meet again Saturday in Section IV Final

NORWICH – Since the 49-7 loss to Chenango Forks in week six, the Norwich Purple Tornado have a three game win streaking defeating Windsor twice and a crazy win over Maine-Endwell––a game where Norwich was seemingly underdog despite being a higher seed.
On Saturday afternoon, the Tornado will try to bring home the program’s first Section IV championship since 1999.
In their way? The last team to beat the Purple this season, the Chenango Forks Blue Devils.
“I told them after that game that we want to play them again and show them we can play better,” said Tornado head coach Mike Chrystie.
In their last meeting Chenango Forks controlled every aspect of the game, totalling 535 yards on offense – 509 of which came on the ground – while also obtaining 31 first downs and holding on to the ball for 30 minutes of the game.
The Blue Devils held Norwich’s top rushers, Drew Walsh and Eric Conant, at bay, only allowing them a total of 27 yards. Overall, offensively, Norwich had 91 yards: 64 rushing, 27 in the air.
“They have a great program and have had more success than any program in New York State history,” said Chrystie. “We respect them tremendously––but we aren’t afraid of anyone.”
While Norwich is looking to avenge their loss from four weeks ago, Chenango Forks is looking to get back to the NYS Class B Championship game, a game they lost to Glens Falls – currently ranked No. 1 in the state – 47-39.
The Purple will have to put the clamps on Blue Devils running backs Jeremiah Allen and Dan Crowingshield. In their first meeting this season, Allen carried the ball 25 times and racked up 244 yards and three touchdowns. Crowingshield took 10 handoffs, gaining 104 yards.
When asked how Norwich will handle these two, as well as the rest of the Blue Devils, Chrystie said, “This will take a true team effort. One person does not beat Forks. We need a total team effort.
“The kids have been working really hard preparing for this game. We have spent a lot of time talking about living in the moment. Norwich football has a lot of history and if we want to put our stamp on Norwich history, then this is the game to win.
“I’ve said it before, this team believes in one another. They have bought into our team concept and the results have shown. We are confident and playing well right now.
“It sounds simple but we need to block and tackle better than we did the first time. They kicked our butt in those two departments the first time.”
Going into this game, Norwich is 7-2 on the season and indisputably the underdog as Chenango Forks is 9-0 and has won every game they have played this season by at least three scores.
When asked about being the underdog, Chrystie stated, “Not many people gave us a chance to beat M-E this year and I’m sure most people have us as the underdog this week. We relish being the underdog. We’ve thrived in that role. I’m proud of my team for staying together and making this season memorable. We might be the underdog, but we don’t plan on going down there and lay an egg. We are going to play to win the game.”
Note: The Norwich Football Boosters invites you to come help send off the football team Saturday morning when the team leaves for the championship game. Join other Norwich Purple Tornado fans in East Park at 11:45 a.m. with your signs and banners. And of course, wear purple.
