CORNING – After facing the Candor Indians on Thursday on their home court in the Class D semifinals, Bainbridge-Guilford knew what they needed to do on Saturday to being the Section IV championship back home for the first time in over a decade.
In the best-of-five championship match, the Bobcats jumped to an early one game lead when they won 25-12 before taking the next two, 25-20 and 25-16.
Once again showing dominance at the net, Bainbridge-Guilford finished with a total of 31 kills in the three games.
Leading the way for the Bobcats’ kills were the trio of Abigail Selfridge, Erica Selfridge and Zamira Caldwell. The three combined for 25 of B-G’s 31 kills.
The Selfridge sisters also helped offensively with their 27 assists in the three sets. “Abigail and Erica have a great knowledge of the game of volleyball as well as a strong desire to succeed,” said Bobcats head coach Tami Selfridge.
Defensively, Caldwell led the team with digs as she recorded 10 during the match. Her teammate Alexis Carr may not have recorded a large stat line but her presence on the court was known by the Indians of Candor as well as everyone watching.
“Zamira and Alexis both bring additional firepower to the team that is needed to make us a bigger threat to our competition,” said Coach Selfridge.
Candor was equally as prepared for the Bobcats as they had a close second game, scoring 20 in the set. The Lady Indians’ stand-out, Braelyn Hornick, led her team with 12 assists, six points and four digs. Her teammate, Jennah Kareem, finished the evening with four kills.
“The Candor we faced on Saturday was much stronger than the one we had seen at Thursday’s semifinals. They had better serve receiving and blocking skills and proved themselves a worthy opponent,” said Coach Selfridge of their counterpart in the final.
Able to bounce back from their close second set, the Bobcats closed the match stronger to finish off the Indians in the third game.
“We are proud to have won the 2017 Section IV Class D title. B-G has not had this honor since 2002,” commented Coach Selfridge about the win. “We are excited to continue our season facing Bishop Grimes in Syracuse next weekend.”
Bainbridge-Guilford will play in the regional final against Bishop Grimes, the Section III champion at 10 a.m. on Saturday November 11 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
