BINGHAMTON – The Chenango Forks Blue Devils scored on every drive they had in the first half, putting 42 points on the scoreboard before the first half was over.
Led by their running back, Jermiah Allen, the Blue Devils had a total of 473 yards on offense. Allen carried the ball for 256 yards on 26 carries and scored four first half touchdowns.
“Allen is a strong back and has a low center of gravity,” said Norwich head coach Mike Chrystie about Allen’s preformance. “He hits the hole hard and has great vision.”
“Their line is where it starts though,” commented Chrystie. “They have a very impressive front five that get off ball very consistently.”
Forks dominated the line of scrimmage as Allen was able to run behind the front five for three to four yards before finding a whole and cutting to the outside.
Norwich started the game with a run by Drew Walsh for a first down but it was Norwich’s only first down of the first half.
Unfortunately, the Purple had no answers on offense, being held scoreless until the second half.
Norwich’s Grant Wessels blocked Chenango Forks’ first punt attempt of the day, giving the Purple good field position that led to their first score of the day. Eric Conant rushed the ball to inside the Blue Devils’ five yard line and two plays later, Wessels punched in from one yard out.
Mike Trevisani came out to kick the extra-point and like he has pretty much all season, sailed it through the uprights. Trevisani finished his first and only season as the Norwich kicker missing one extra-point attempt through out the year.
The next touchdown for the Tornado was by Conant, who turned on his jets to get the Norwich sideline then ran upfield for 24 yards and the score. Again, Trevisani tacked on the extra-point giving Norwich 14 unanswered points in the third quarter.
Conant finished as Norwich’s leading rusher with 80 yards on 9 carries and one touchdown.
Brennan Slater forced Forks’ Troy Arno to fumble at the Norwich 39-yard line. Slater attempted to scoop the ball and run towards the end-zone but just couldn’t get a handle on the ball. But his teammate, David Berger was in the right place at the right time as he picked up the loose fumble and ran it in for the score.
Berger’s defensive TD and Trevisani’s final extra-point was the last of the scoring for either team for the afternoon.
Chrystie said of his team this season, “I’m proud of my team for what we accomplished this year. We made a lot of great memories and gained a lot of experience making it to the sectional finals. The seniors have paved a path of success for the underclass men that hopefully they follow. Winning seven games in our division, which I think is the toughest in the State, is amazing. We fell short of our goal of winning a sectional title but I’m extremely proud of my team.”
Norwich will say farewell to their 12 seniors with a 7-3 finish, the best the program has had since their 2004 team finished 8-2.
