CICERO – Fire trucks sounded their horns and flashed their lights. A line of parents in vehicles behind joined in and honked their horns. Community members lined Main Street in Bainbridge. In the middle of it all? A school bus carrying the Lady Bobcats volleyball team, the 2017 NYS Regional Class D Champions.
Sweeping Section III champion Bishop Grimes in three games, Bainbridge-Guilford will now move onto the New York State finals next weekend in Glens Falls.
In the first game, the Lady Bobcats took down the Bishop Grimes Cobras in dominating fashion, winning 25-14. This is something Bainbridge-Guilford has done often this season as they now carry a season overall record of 16-1.
“Our plan going into the game was to come out firing from the start and not let them in the game,” said Bobcats Head Coach Tami Selfridge. “That worked for us in game one but then we let them play with us in game two.”
The Bobcats allowed Bishop Grimes to score 21 points on them, one of the very few tems that has been able to do that this season. But B-G was able to hold on for the game two win as they were the first to 25.
The team was able to pull themselves back together and regroup after game two as they controlled game three, showing the Bobcat team that Coach Selfridge knows best. Bainbridge-Guilford took game three 25-13, sweeping the Cobras for the match win.
“Saturday’s regional game was a great example of our diverse attack game as we had many girls hitting at the net and our serving toughness proved challenging for Grimes to handle,” said Coach Selfridge.
Abigail Selfridge was one of those many B-G girls as she finished with 11 kills during the contest. Kid sister, Erica Selfridge assisted on 16 points while Abi Selfridge finished with eights assists.
Zamira Caldwell was another hard hitting Bobcat as she tallied four kills while teammates Makenzie Drown and Erica Selfridge both spiked the ball five times past the Bishop Grimes front three.
Defensively, Alexis Carr recorded six digs and Abi Selfridge had a team high 10 for Bainbridge-Guilford.
The Bobcats will start off ‘Championship Weekend’ with pool play on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The finals are the following day, Sunday, at 2 p.m.
“We are excited to be heading to states next week and plan to use a similar strategy there,” said Coach Selfridge. “We play our best when we play to win rather than playing not to lose.”
