Greene’s 11 point comeback not enough to overcome Moravia
GREENE – Down by 17, the Greene Trojans fought back with 11 points to come within six of the visiting Moravia Blue Devils with 29 seconds left. The comeback proved to be a little too late as the Trojans were downed by Moravia 58-48 Tuesday night.
Held to only three points in the first quarter, Greene had a big wall to climb to get back in to the contest as their opponent put eight on the scoreboard in each of the first two quarters.
The Trojans were able to pull within two before the end of the first half and looked to carry the momentum into the second. But the third quarter proved to be the achilles heel for the home team, allowing the Blue Devils to score 21 points.
“Our defense got broke down in the third and we just lost focus after the half,” said Greene’s head coach Chris Rice. “We need to play 32 minutes. We have a young crew and we will get back in the gym and get it worked out.”
Helping Moravia to the 21 point quarter was Kaleb Stayton as he opened the quarter with a three-pointer and teammate Carter Flick chipped on six on back-to-back three’s. Stayton finished the quarter with 11.
Greene answered with a 22 point quarter themselves that had balanced scoring from Nathan Barry, Brandon Whittaker, and Nate Erickson.
The Trojans’ Barry finished with game-high 15 points and Erickson followed with 14 while Moravia’s Stayton scored 14 for a team-high. The Blue Devils’ Scottie Sovocool and Gavin Stayton both added 11 points.
