Unadilla Valley to unveil building renovations at open house Saturday

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley Central School will open its doors to the public this Saturday, December 9 for an open house unveiling the school's first major set of renovations since its original construction 15 years ago.

From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., members of the community will be treated to building tours, refreshments, and an opportunity to see the finished $12.8 million building project – which focuses on safety, efficiency, and longevity – firsthand.

The renovations include building energy and security improvements, HVAC upgrades, flooring improvements, energy efficient lighting, pool area improvements, and the construction of a new 7,000-square-foot STEAM wing.

UVCSD Superintendent Robert Mackey said, "The biggest part of this project is maintenance, which includes lighting, windows and heating and ventilation upgrades, to make it a more comfortable environment in every room."

According to a UVCSD newsletter, the project was approved by voters in May 2015 and is funded through a combination of building aid from New York State, EXCEL aid, the district's capital reserve fund, and funding from the Smart Schools Bond Act. There is no increase to the school's taxpayers in association with the renovations.

The renovations aim to cut energy costs while also boosting learning opportunities for students. The newly constructed STEAM wing, complete with a 'makerspace' for students, will foster an integrated approach to students' learning science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

"These renovations offer students a makerspace like they have never had before," said Mackey. "It's a safe makerspace, a technologically advanced makerspace that I don't think exists anywhere right now in this region. Given the set-up and the layout that was designed, I believe students can do from an idea on a small piece of scrap paper to a complete manufactured product and every step in between and all they have to do is move 50 feet from one end of the hallway to the other."

Mackey said the renovations also put the district in a position where it is hoping over time to allow increased community use of the district's facilities. Common areas like the library, gymnasiums, pool, and fitness room all received upgrades.

As the district celebrates the unveiling of its upgrades at Saturday's open house, the UVCSD Board of Education, administration, and staff are already looking forward to the next phase of improvements. While details are still being developed, the district plans to put forth a capital project during the school's budget vote in May 2018 that will continue to focus on energy efficiency and revitalizing classroom space.

"We are entrusted by the community to be good stewards of school district property," said Mackey. "A vital component of that is to ensure our school building remains an efficient, safe, and productive facility for learning."
