Norwich Indoor Track Competes at John DiMao and Bomber Invitationals
NORWICH- Over the course of Friday December 8 and Saturday December 9, the Norwich Purple Tornado indoor track team participated in two competitive meets hosted across Central New York. The Friday nightcap meet known as the John DiMao Invitational was held at Sanford Field House on the Colgate University campus, while Saturday’s Bomber Invitational was held at the Ithaca College Athletics and Events Center.
Up first on the docket for the Tornado athletes was the Friday nightcap at Colgate. For the NHS girl’s team, Caroline Stewart placed third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 8.00 seconds flat. Stewart followed up her success on the track with a third place finish in the long jump with a leap of 14-11.25 feet.
Following their senior teammate’s lead, Riley Marsh sprinted to an eighth place finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 10.88 seconds.
Going back to the pits, Angela Carlson took a sixth place finish in triple jump with her 27-08 foot finish.
In the cage, Elizabeth Karlson placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 27-11 feet. Fellow thrower, Liliana Talbot- Gould placed ninth in the shot put with her throw of 25-08 feet.
Moving over to the boy’s side of the meet at Colgate, NHS sprinter David Berger took a first place finish in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.95 seconds. Additionally, Berger took a sixth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 17-10.5 feet.
In the 4x400 meter relay, the quartet of Nik Barber, Julian Roque, James Heath, and Justin Bates stuck close with their competition on their way to a time of 4:05.57 minutes claiming a third place finish. In the shot put, the trio of Purple Tornado throwers Zach Lowe, Robert Shepard, and Devin Moore all claimed top ten finishes. Lowe finished third with a throw of 39-03.5, Shepard finished fourth with a throw of 37-10, and Moore finished ninth with a throw of 35-09.
Capping off their weekend competition the Tornado traveled to the Bomber invitational at Ithaca College. Starting off the meet strong was NHS sprinter Eric Conant who received a fifth place finish in the 55-meter dash with his time of 6.79 seconds. Conant later placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 19-07.75 feet.
In the 600 meters, Gabe Gawronski placed third with a time of 1:25.14 minutes. Not only did Gawronski compete against his fierce competition in the event, but he chased the ghost of a former Purple Tornado middle-distance runner.
Former 600 meter state-champion and Norwich High School alumni Matt Murray set the Bomber invite meet record in the 600 meter event with a time of 1:22.43 in 2013.
In the 4x800meter relay, the NHS crew of Noah Bufalini, Connor Nial, Alex Taylor and Gawronski placed third with a time of 9:01.42 minutes.
Norwich’s next meet is scheduled for Friday with the time and place yet to be announced.
