Shop with a Sheriff has most successful year

NORWICH – For the straight third year, Chenango County Sheriff employees dedicated themselves to a good-will fundraiser that helped dozens of local school children go holiday shopping this Saturday.

The ‘Shop with a Sheriff’ event is hosted by the Chenango County Law Enforcement Association and the Chenango County Sheriff’s Employees Association. The two unions represent the employees from the local road patrol, correction and civil departments at the sheriff’s office.

Deputies and correction officers took 31 children Christmas shopping at the Norwich Walmart on December 9. The children were nominated for the event by each school district from Chenango County.

When they arrived Saturday morning, law enforcement volunteers chaperoned the children through the aisles, permitting each to spend $100 on themselves and $100 on their family members for the holidays.

The kids bought warm clothing, toys, electronics and gifts for family members.

“The event was an absolute success due to the sponsorship by many local businesses and individuals. We are very appreciative of all their support,” said Law Enforcement Association President and Sheriff’s Detective John Fern.

“We decided three years ago there was a need to give back to the community. We looked around at other successful programs and our original idea was inspired from another law enforcement agency. Then we decided we could put our own program together,” explained Sheriff’s Lt. Detective Richard Cobb.

“We sought community donations and they’ve been overwhelmingly generous. We were able to spend $200 per child this year, which is more than last year,” Cobb said.

The requirements for participation in the program is decided by each school district, but the general themes include considerations of academic and participatory merits from all grade levels.

Sheriff employees also donated money out of their own pockets to help make this event happen. The amount donated by sheriff deputies was equally matched, “dollar for dollar,” by the Chenango County Law Enforcement Association, said Fern.
