Police name deceased 18-year-old after Bainbridge collision

BAINBRIDGE – New York State Police have released the name of an individual who died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision in Bainbridge on Wednesday.


Police say Maleek D. Smith, 18, of Staatsburg was pronounced dead after being airlifted to UHS Wilson Hospital in Johnson City following a two-vehicle collision on State Route 206 in Bainbridge last week.


A NYSP investigation revealed that a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse operated by Smith was traveling eastbound on State Route 206 when the vehicle crossed into the westbound lane directly into the path of a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche operated by Joseph Artuso, 53, of Syracuse.

Following the collision, Smith was transported via ambulance to Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney before being airlifted to UHS Wilson Hospital where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.
