NEW BERLIN – It took a Shaquille O’Neal sized game from Cooperstown’s Owen Kennedy for the Hawkeyes to prevail against fellow Class C opponent Unadilla Valley 64-52 Monday night. Kennedy used his 6-foot-8-inch frame to pull down an improbable 31 rebounds on the evening.
While not know for certain, surely by any stretch of the imagination the Hawkeye senior broke a Cooperstown single game record. If that didn’t catch your attention, Kennedy led his team in scoring with 31 points.
However, while Kennedy proved the bulk of the buckets and boards, teammate Jack Lambert scored 28 points and added eight rebounds of his own.
Given the offensive performances from Kennedy and Lambert, the Unadilla Valley defense had their hands full by trying to contain the highly powered duo. By the time the first quarter came to a close, the two teams remained deadlocked at 15.
The second quarter showed the essence of how this game would be fought; with offense. The UV Storm dropped in 21 points in the period, while limiting their opponents’ offensive attack to only 18 points, giving UV a slim three point halftime lead.
With the Storm’s defense targeting the Hawkeyes’ Kennedy, Lambert became the offensive juggernaut Cooperstown needed in the second half. Managing to tie the game entering the fourth quarter, Cooperstown resorted to their biggest strength in the game; offense.
Outscoring the Storm 31-16, the Hawkeyes took down Unadilla Valley in the final two periods as Lambert led the way with 16 points over the final 16 minutes of play for Cooperstown.
Leading Unadilla Valley in scoring was Dante Dye with 14, Andrew Jackson added 13 and Levi Rifanburg tossed in 10.
The Storm return to the court when they travel to Unatego on Wednesday December 20, with game time set for 7:15 p.m.
