Lady Bobcats handed first loss of season; other local girls basketball

DELHI – Delhi’s Logan Bruce dropped 25 for the Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night to hand Bainbridge-Guilford a 58-45 on Tuesday night, their first loss of the season.
Jumping out to a quick 18-6 lead over the visiting Bobcats in the opening quarter, Delhi shut down Bainbridge-Guilford’s Megan Palmatier. Bruce opened the game with 11 in the first quarter.
B-G pulled within eight before the intermission behind Zamira Caldwell’s performance at the free-throw line in the second quarter and Erica Selfridge’s seven points.
Palmatier came out in the third, finishing three buckets to get her scoring going. But the Bobcats again were outscored by the Bulldogs, 18-9, to grow their lead and ultimately seal a MAC conference win.
Megan Palmatier led B-G with 16 points, all coming in the second half. Teammate Abi Selfridge scored 10 while Erica Selfridge chipped in 8 points.
The Bobcats next game is Thursday as they square up against Unadilla Valley for the second time this season. Bainbridge-Guilford snagged the win in the championship game of the Sherburne-Earlville Tip-Off Tournament. The Bobcats will be looking to rebound from this game while the Storm will be looking for revenage from their first meeting. Game is scheduled tip off at 7:15 p.m.

Deposit/Hancock 60, Afton 30
AFTON – Afton’s Casey East completed the night with double-double in points and steals but the game ended with a Deposit/Hancock 60-30 win over the Crimson Knights Tuesday night.
East scored 13 points and wound up with 10 steals despite the loss.
D-H’s leading scorer, Laycee Drake scored 16 points, which is on the lower side for one of the section’s best. But that was in large part to Afton’s Abby Beaulieu tasks of guarding Drake.
“Abby [Beaulieu] played Drake man to man and did a good job,” Afton head coach Lacy Stanton said. “Drake in some foul trouble early on because of Abby’s defense and that helped.”
Afton scored a combined 11 points after the first two quarters because of a rought shooting night for the Crimson Knights. Afton found themselves in a 20 point whole at the half and was determined to do anything they could to close the gap.
The Crimson Knights shooting picked up in the second half but the first half defecit was too much to overcome for the home team.
Deposit/Hancock’s Malorie Rutledge finished with a game-high 17 points in the win, with most of her effort coming from the the three-point line. Rutledge knocked down four in the contest from behind the arc.
Afton is done for nine days for the holiday but takes on Greene to open the Oxford Tournament on December 28.

Unatego 51, Unadilla Valley 38
OTEGO –Julia Oglesby recorded a double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds Tuesday night but Unadilla Valley lost on the road to Unatego, 51-38 in a MAC Conference matchup.
The Lady Storm had a rough night from the field, shooting 15-for-69 (21.7 percent), only putting four point on the scoreboard in the first quarter. “We aren’t going to win many games shooting terrible from the field,” said Uv’s head coach Brandi Whitbeck.
Unatego led by five after one and carried that same lead into the intermission as both teams scored 14 in the second stanza as Oglesby scored eight of her points to help keep the game within arms length for UV.
Dana Stepp knocked down one of her three-pointers to keep her team ahead in the third before Unatego took the slightly larger advantage into the fourth quarter.
In the final eight minutes, Unatego forced Unadilla Valley to make some turnovers and the Lady Spartans to advantage, finishing the game with a 20-13 point quarter.
Stepp finished with 13 points as Unatego’s leading scorer.
The Storm play again Thursday when they host the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats. The two have met already once this season with B-G taking the win. Game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
