DICK’S Sporting Goods Open earns PGA TOUR Champions Sales Award
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The DICK’s Sporting Goods Open, conducted annually at En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott, N.Y., was awarded the PGA TOUR Champions Sales Award at the PGA TOUR’s Tournament Meetings on Thursday, December 7 in Boca Raton, Fla.
“On behalf of PGA TOUR Champions, I’m pleased to present the 2017 Sales Award to the DICK’s Sporting Goods Open,” said PGA TOUR Champions President Greg McLaughlin. “Because DICK’s Sporting Goods has been a passionate and engaged partner, the tournament has been able to achieve tremendous success and create a premier event for players, fans and sponsors.”
The Sales Award is presented annually to the PGA TOUR Champions event which shows tremendous sales growth year on year, while establishing high sales marks across the spectrum of all Tour events.
In 2017, the tournament succeeded on a number of fronts:
•Increased sales by 33 percent over prior year
•Exceeded tournament sales goal by 14 percent
•More than 600 sponsors/clients involved in the 2017 event, an increase of 22 percent over prior year
•Added and sold out two new hospitality venues to meet demand
•Surpassed $3 million in local sales for the first time in tournament history
This is the seventh award the DICK’s Sporting Goods Open has received since its inception in 2007. It earned the highest honor on PGA TOUR Champions in 2012 and 2013, as it received the President’s Award as the tournament that encapsulates the criteria of all tournament awards. In 2009 and 2014, the tournament won the Players Award, which recognizes a tournament that goes above and beyond in the experience it provides to PGA TOUR Champions players. The tournament was also named the Most Improved Event in 2011 and was given the Above & Beyond Award in 2008.
“This Award is a tremendous honor for our team, and speaks to the year-round efforts put forth to bring an exciting event to this region,” said Tournament Director John Karedes. “Through the wonderful support of DICK’s Sporting Goods and our incredible golf fans, we’ve been able to create a meaningful community footprint through this game, which in turn allowed us to enjoy a phenomenal 2017 on the sales front.”
Scott McCarron became the tournament’s 11th champion in August, as he birdied the final three holes en route to a one-stroke victory over Kevin Sutherland. After opening with a 71, McCarron closed with rounds of 61-64, the lowest 36-hole total on PGA TOUR Champions in 2017. The win was McCarron’s third of four on the season and he went on to finish third in the final Charles Schwab Cup standings, while Sutherland would become the Charles Schwab Cup champion after winning the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
The DICK’s Sporting Goods Open will again be played at En-Joie Golf Club the week of August 17-19, 2018.
