NORWICH – As the bitter cold has everyone looking ahead to the end of winter and the beginning of spring, local St. Baldrick's organizers are recruiting shavees for its 14th annual Norwich St. Baldrick's event steadily approaching on March 24.
So far, the Norwich St. Baldrick's 2018 campaign has already raised nearly $6,000 thanks to sponsors and initial fundraisers, but event organizer A. Jones noted that over 90 percent of the money raised each year is on the heads of shavees.
"It's an event that we've gotten a tremendous amount of community and area support from, but it's a large mission and we want to continue expanding it, we want it to be bigger and bigger each year," said Jones.
Last year's St. Baldrick's featured 33 shavees who helped raise $29,284––the third highest amount the Norwich St. Baldrick's fundraiser has raised to date––100 percent of which was donated to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which doles out grants annually for childhood cancer research.
"The shavees do two things: they're not only raising funds for childhood cancer research, but they're also showing that they're standing up in solidarity with kids who have cancer," said Jones.
The Norwich St. Baldrick's has raised over $27,000 each of the last three years, including its highest total of $31,000 two years ago, but Jones and St. Baldrick's organizers aren't settling just yet.
"The earlier we can get shavees on board, the more time they have to raise funds, and it would be great if we could beat our fundraising goal again this year and maybe even make it our top year," said Jones.
If you or someone you know is interested in registering as a shavee, visit www.stbaldricks.org/events/norwich. From there, shavees who register will be given a fundraising page where donors can sponsor shavees.
Jones said donors can also bring cash or checks to the event itself on Saturday, March 24 at 6 p.m. in the Norwich American Legion Banquet Hall.
