Marauders defense leads to win at home over Wildcats
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s head coach Kevin Vibbard was waiting for his team to put together a two-half, complete game performance this season. Letting their pressuring defense become their offense, the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders defeated the visiting Adirondack Wildcats by 35 points Monday night to give their coach what he has been waiting for.
Sherburne-Earlville jumped out to a 18-12 advantage after the first quarter, in large part of their shooting performance from behind the three-point line. Hunter Lane knocked down two while teammates Sylas Swingle and Gabe Irwin each added one, accounting for 12 of their 18 points.
The Marauders didn’t show any signs of slowing down as they continued to outscore their opponent in every quarter. Sherburne-Earlville’s defense created their offense, whether it was from a defensive rebound or a caused turnover, the Marauders ran the floor in transition.
Sherburne-Earlville’s 26 point third quarter come from Lane’s 12 points and Dawson Lagoe’s eight. Lagoe finished with 12 while Lane tallied a game-high 22 points and Irwin added a total of 10 for the game.
“We played outstanding defense both halves and really got out to run the floor,” said Vibbard.
The Marauders held Adirondack to five points twice in the contest and only allowed a total of 34 points for the opposition. Sherburne-Earlville will look to do the same on Thursday when they host Sauquoit Valley at 7 p.m.
George Junior Republic 75, Otselic Valley 42
FREEVILLE – Since their first meeting this season, one in which the Vikings took by seven points, George Junior Republic has improved. So much so that the Falcons took down Otselic Valley Monday night with a final of 75-42.
George Junior received a very balanced scoring performance from everyone as they had five of their six players score in double-digits.
“We struggle to stop the transition and the dribble penetration by our opponent,” said Otselic Valley’s head coach Jacob Preston.
Clayton O’Hara and Gordon Marshall led the Vikings in the loss as each scored 12 points. O’Hara pulled down eight boards as well.
The Vikings will look to rebound on Wednesday when they face a 2-2 Poland team at home. Game is scheduled to start 7 p.m.
Girls Basketball
Madison 42, Otselic Valley 39
OTSELIC – Last season the Lady Vikings played Madison three times. In the first two games, Otselic Valley lost to the Blue Devils. But in the third game was the all Vikings as they took the win by 12.
This season, Otselic Valley has already lost to Madison by 29 points each time. Playing the Blue Devils for the third time this season Monday night, Vikings head coach Nicholle Lippert and her team were looking for the same outcome from a season ago.
Coming out with a lot of emotion and energy, OV put 17 on the scoreboard and took a eight point lead.
Madison fought back, outscoring the Vikings 7-3 in a defensive second quarter. But Otselic Valley maintained a two point lead at the break.
The third was an strong quarter for both team as neither backed down from the challenge of the exciting game. The Blue Devils edged out OV, 16-15 for the quarter behind eight points from Kayla Usborne. However, till holding onto the lead from the first eight minutes, Otselic Valley saw an upset in the works.
Unfortunately, Madison’s defense held the Vikings leading scorer Amber Meigs to three points in the final eight minutes. Usborne added another six points in the fourth, outscoring OV on her own in a 23 point comeback effort, leading the Blue Devils to victory.
Meigs scored a game-high 28 points and pulled in six boards in the Vikings loss. Teammate Cassie Agren grabbed 12 boards.
“Tonight we were going in with the same attitude as last year looking to shock some people,” said Lippert. “Our team played with the intensity I was expecting from them for the entire game. The girls on the court were working together and meshing well on defense. The girls on the bench were playing their parts as they were talking to the girls on the floor and making the adjustments when they went in.
“I couldn’t have asked for more from them tonight unfortunately we didn’t come out with the win but we are going with this momentum into our next game, which is Thursday at DeRuyter.”
Thursday’s contest will be the first between the two teams this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

NORWICH – The Purple Tornado honored their two seniors on the boys team with a sweeping win over the visiting Chenango Valley Warriors Monday night.
Kai Sheer lead the Norwich bowlers with a high-series 592 in the match. He also held the high games of the night with a 207 and 200.
Senior A.J. Little had nice last match on his home lanes as he bowled a 517 series for the match. His highest game was a 185. Norwich’s Dylan Gladstone, also a senior honored Monday, rolled a 190 for his highest game on his way to a 477 match series.
Chenango Valley was led by Vincent Tatich’s series 575 and a high game of 215.
Norwich will look to follow up their strong performance from Monday on the road in Owego later today.
Oxford 4, Deposit 0
NORWICH – The Blackhawks bowled their way to a 4-0 sweep when they hosted Deposit Monday afternoon as they took all three games and the pin total with a 2035-1919.
Tanner Tefft led the Oxford team with a series high 437 and rolled to the second highest game of the afternoon with 172.
Deposit’s Gabe Rynearson took high game honors with a 187.
Dakota Simpson also bowled well during Monday’s match as he finished with a 421 series while teammate Trevor Johnson picked up 379 towards Oxford’s pin total.
Oxford hosts for a second time this week when Bainbridge-Guilford travels for a MAC conference matchup on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
Girls Bowling
Chenango Valley 5, Norwich 0
NORWICH – The Norwich girls team honored their four seniors before the match along with the boys but were topped by the Lady Warriors Monday night as Chenango Valley took all five points for the match.
Megan Turner bowled to a team high series of 413 with her highest game being a 143.
Norwich’s Kalie Binelli finished her last home match with a score of 313 while other seniors Jazmin Rodriguez bowled a 308 series and Logan Bufalini ended her home lane career with a 279.
The Lady Purple Tornado will also be in action later today when they travel to Owego with the boys team.
Oxford 4, Deposit 0
NORWICH – The Lady Blackhawks remain perfect this season as they swept Deposit on the lanes Monday afternoon. Oxford took the pin total point towards the win by 1199 pins.
Erin Howard of Oxford continues to dominate in the MAC conference as she bowled series-high 547 with a 200 game in the second of three. Destiny Beang rolled to the highest game in the girls match with a 208. Beang finished with a 511 series score.
Jourdan Pinney and Savannah Beech finished with series above 450 as Pinney finished with a 476. Beech recorded a 483.
Deposit’s Amanda Scala ended the afternoon with a team-high 336 series.
The Lady Blackhawks will also host the Bobcats on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
