Man who struck trooper with vehicle charged with attempted murder

BINGHAMTON – A man who is accused of intentionally striking a New York State Trooper with his vehicle in Binghamton last week has been formally charged with two counts of attempted murder.

James A. Giacalone, 36, of Glen Aubrey, NY was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder on Monday after he allegedly intentionally struck an officer with his vehicle in an attempt to flee pursuing police on January 2.

According to a release from New York State Police, at approximately 5:05 p.m. on January 2, troopers initiated the pursuit of a 2017 Ford Fusion operated by Giacalone on Mitchell Avenue in the City of Binghamton.

Upon attempting to pull Giacalone over, Giacalone attempted to flee, crashing his vehicle into a utility pole on Alfred Street.

"In an attempt to escape, Giacalone backed his vehicle down Alfred Street, across Conklin Avenue, and into a parking lot where he stopped," states the release from NYSP.

"As the troopers approached the vehicle, Giacalone suddenly accelerated forward, striking one of the pursuing troopers. That member discharged one round from his division-issued sidearm. Giacalone received a gunshot wound to the face, but continued to flee in his vehicle."

Police allege in addition to striking the officer, Giacalone attempted to strike a second officer in his attempt to flee.

Police say they arrested Giacalone on foot a short distance away.

Both Giacalone and the injured trooper were taken to Wilson Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The injured trooper was treated and released, and Giacalone was transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, and is in stable condition.

Giacalone is being detained by authorities in Montour County, PA in lieu of $250,000 bond. Police say Giacalone will be extradited to New York State following his release from Geisinger Medical Center.

As part of the investigation, NYSP were assisted by the Pennsylvania State Police, Mahoning Township Police Department, and the security department at Geisinger Medical Center.
