Lady Tornado intensity and balanced play too much for Forks in win

CHENANGO FORKS – Norwich’s tenacity to start the game on the road in Chenango Forks was the best they have had so far this year said head coach Josh Bennett as the Lady Tornado outscored the host Blue Devils 22-4 in the first quarter en route to their 61-42 win Tuesday night.
Norwich made Forks turn the ball over to start the game, allowing the Purple to get out in transition and get baskets at the rim. Leading the teamin the first quarter was Saige Benedict, finishing the quarter with six points. Halea Eaton and Triniti Myers added four apeice as Norwich received balance scoring from everyone in the first eight minutes of play.
With no let up happening in the second, the Lady Purple added another 14 points behind the long-range attack of Myers, who hit two three-pointers in the quarter while teammate Abby Flynn finished at the basket for four, giving the road team a 36-12 advantage at the break.
The offensive attack wasn’t over for Norwich. Coming out of halftime, Flynn added another five in the quarter. However, it was Sydney Coggins who dialed in from long distance in the third as she knocked down two from the beyond the arc for the Purple, giving Norwich a 17 point quarter.
In the final stanza, it was Eaton’s turn to be the Tornado’s sniper from the three-point line as she hit one from outside, continuing to add to Norwich’s already comanding lead.
Forks made a comeback effort in the fourth behind the Blue Devils’ Katie Flynn as she poured in 13 of her game-high 19. But it was too late for the home team as Norwich’s first two quarters were too strong.
“We received very balanced play from everyone tonight,” said Bennett. “We came out very tough and it was the best intensity we had all year.”
Flynn led Norwich in the scoring column with 13 as Eaton and Myers finished the game with 11 apiece. Benedict chipped in eight while Coggins recorded six along with Taylor Hansen.
Norwich will be looking to carry the intesity into the Juggler Tournament this weekend, hosted by Utica Notre Dame. They play a first round game Saturday with the championship or consolation game to be played on Sunday.
